However, they have retained the courage that was originally bred into them for bull baiting, making them fine watchdogs and home protectors. Unfortunately Bulldogs have various health problems an owner and prospective buyer should be aware of. These may include cardiac and respiratory disease, hip dysplasia, conjunctivitis, and other problems. They are extremely susceptible to heat, and their breathing is noisy and laboured. Bulldogs can easily drown in swimming pools or other water, and may require daily cleaning of their skin folds to avoid crusting and infections. Bulldogs have a life expectency of 8-10 years old.
